California Economy

California has about 18 million wokders. The largest share of those, about 40 percent, work in the services sector. They do work such as restaurant work or computer programming. About 19 percent works in either wholesale or retail trade; 15 percent work in federal, state, or local government, including those in the military; 12 percent in manufacturing; 31 percent in finance, insurance, or real estate; 5 percent in construction; 5 percent in transportation or public utilities; 3 percent in farming (including agricultural services), forestry, or fishing; and just 0.2 percent in mining. In 2005, 17 percent of California’s workers belonged to a labor union.

Education in California

Among the state’s more prominent institutions of higher learning are the Univ. of California, with nine campuses; the California State University System, with 23 campuses; Occidental College and the Univ. of Southern California, at Los Angeles; Stanford Univ., at Stanford; the California Institute of Technology, at Pasadena; Mills College, at Oakland; and the Claremont Colleges, at Claremont.
