The Division of Nursing is committed to providing quality undergraduate and graduate programs in nursing. Thus the Division of Nursing offers programs leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, a School Nurse Health Services credential, and a Master's of Science in Nursing. Course offerings evolve from a philosophical belief that nurses function to assist health care consumers to achieve positive adaptive responses which lead to optimal wellness levels. The professional nurse thinks critically and uses the problem-solving process in identifying health needs or problems, planning and implementing nursing care, and evaluating the effects of nursing intervention.

The curriculum of the Division is organized around the concept of reciprocal adaptation and the theories which relate to the changing needs of the individual, family, group, and community. The faculty believes that each person is a unique, valued being who possesses intellectual, physiological, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual needs. The individual and the environment are in a continuous reciprocal process of change and adaptation. The nurse uses caring behaviors and the science of nursing to facilitate positive adaptive responses in human beings by mobilizing human and environmental resources to promote healing, maintain well-being, prevent illness, and promote health.

The nurse views the health care consumer holistically, using nursing science, and knowledge from the arts and sciences in a uniquely dynamic, interpersonal manner to maximize the adaptation of health care recipients in a variety of settings. http://www.calstatela.edu/dept/nursing/index.htm Cal State LA - College of HHS, School of Nursing

Nursing is a health care profession which systematically assists patients/clients to achieve health or health-related goals. The focus of nursing has moved away from a disease-oriented to a health promotion system of care and nurses provide health care for individuals, families and communities. It is our belief that students, endowed with the capacity for self-direction, are responsible for their own learning and self-development.

Cal State LA presently offer a B.S. degree for basic (pre-licensure) and transfer RN students, an M.S. degree for accelerated RNs without a B.S. degree, RNs with a non-nursing B.S. degree and non-RNs with a B.S. or higher degree (ELMN), and a Health Services Credential for School Nurses. Advanced practice options offered in the graduate program include: Nursing Education, Nursing Administration, Psychiatric/Mental Health CNS, Nursing Case Management and four Nurse Practitioner options: primary and acute adult, primary and acute pediatric, family and psychiatric/mental health.

We have a total enrollment of over 300 baccalaureate students and approximately 100 graduate students. There are 20 full-time faculty and additional part-time faculty prepared in various clinical specialties.

The CSU Chico School of Nursing offers programs leading to the bachelor's and master's degrees. There is a great potential for nursing in the rapidly changing health care system, and the nursing faculty is committed to the preparation of graduates who will be leaders of the future.

CSU, Chico baccalaureate graduates are prepared to be the future leaders in nursing and are well regarded in the nursing community. In addition to basic RN education, CSU, Chico has included RN-BSN education since the School of Nursing began in 1954.

The current RN-BSN pattern accentuates flexibility and convenience for the working nurse, including nurses in distant communities. This has occurred as a result of rapid advances in computer technology and online course capability.

Applicants who hold LVN licenses may qualify for advanced placement admission to nursing. LVNs may choose an LVN-BSN track or the LVN 30-unit option, which meets the requirements for taking the RN licensing examination in California but does not lead to a BSN degree.

The master's degree program at California State University, Chico has been in existence since 1970 and is accredited by the National League for Nurses. Our graduates currently function in influential health advisory positions at the state level, as nursing faculty in programs throughout California, as administrators in many types of health organizations, and as expert clinicians and managers.

Brief history
The School of Nursing, established in 1905, was the first in a group of schools that in 1961 became Loma Linda University. In 1949 the School of Nursing became a college-based program granting the baccalaureate degree. In 1970 the associate in science degree program was started as an integral part of the School. The first master's degrees in nursing were granted in 1957.

Accreditation
The School of Nursing received its first accreditation by the National League for Nursing (NLN) in 1951; and currently the NLN accredits the bachelor of science and master of science degree programs. The most recent NLN accreditation was in 1999. The School has California Board of Registered Nursing approval from 2003 to 2008. The School of Nursing is currently accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education until 2009.

Mission statement
The mission of the School of Nursing, in accord with the comprehensive mission of Loma Linda University, is the education of professional nurses who are dedicated to excellence in nursing science. Individuals from diverse ethnic, cultural, and racial backgrounds are encouraged to embrace opportunities for lifelong growth and satisfaction from a career committed to health care. Baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs contribute to the development of expert clinicians, educators, administrators and researchers who benefit society by providing and improving delivery of whole-person care to clients -- individuals, families, groups, and communities. Committed to Christian service and distinctive Seventh-day Adventist ideals, the school seeks to reflect God's love through its teaching and healing ministry.

Our students
Our primary responsibility is the education of students, who come from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, enabling them to acquire the foundation of knowledge, skills, values, attitudes, and behaviors appropriate for their chosen academic or health-care ministry. We nurture their intellectual curiosity. We facilitate their development into active, independent learners. We provide continuing educational opportunities for our alumni and professional peers. We encourage a personal Christian faith that permeates the lives of those we educate.

Our faculty, staff, and administration
We respect our faculty, staff, and administration who through education, research, and service create a stimulating learning environment for our students. They contribute to the development of new understandings in their chosen fields. They demonstrate both Christian values and competence in their scholarship and professions.

Our patients and others we serve
We provide humanitarian service through people, programs, and facilities. We promote healthful living and respond to the therapeutic and rehabilitative needs of people. We seek to enhance the quality of life for individuals in local, regional, national, and world communities.

School's philosophy
In harmony with Loma Linda University and the Seventh-day Adventist Church, the School of Nursing believes that the aim of education and health care is the development of wholeness in those served. Individuals, created to reflect the wholeness of God's character, have been impaired by the entrance of sin, disease, and death. God's purpose is the restoration of each person to the original state at Creation. God works through human agencies to make individuals whole.

Nursing functions are to assist individuals and societal groups to attain their highest potential of wholeness. Through a variety of roles, nurses put into practice a body of knowledge and a repertoire of skills to assist the human system with health problems. The School of Nursing provides an environment in which the student and faculty may grow in professional competence and Christian grace.

In support of the philosophy, mission, and values of Loma Linda University and the philosophy, mission and values of the School of Nursing, the faculty affirms the following beliefs:

  • Learning is an interactive process which involves all of the learner's faculties.
  • A learning environment nurtures the development of potential, promotes the maturation of values, cultivates the ability to think critically and independently, and encourages the spirit of inquiry.
  • Clinical experiences are essential to the development of professional and technical nursing competence.
  • Students influenced by the effect of physiological, psychological, sociocultural, developmental, and spiritual variables on their lives learn in different ways, and bring different meanings to the learning experience.
  • Students participate in development of the science and practice of nursing.

The profession of nursing is more than merely caring for the sick. It has to do with understanding the physical, mental and emotional health of the individual. But having a heart of caring and compassion does help. Whether it’s caring for elderly, the injured or the terminally ill, nurses display Christ-like compassion on an everyday basis. If you have a desire to care as He cared, PLNU’s School of Nursing, which is highly respected in San Diego and around the world, is the place for you. It seeks to prepare its students as responsible, competent professionals committed to leadership based on the Wesleyan tradition.

Overview

PLNU’s nursing program has a 32 year history in the San Diego community. The Nursing Program is six semesters of nursing curriculum and students apply to the program upon successful completion of prerequisite courses. Consideration for the nursing major is based on cumulative GPA, GPA at Point Loma, letters of recommendation, strength of application and writing ability.

Following selection by the School of Nursing, students must satisfy minimal standards for physical and emotional health required by a nursing professional. These include a physical examination by a healthcare provider and per agreement with the San Diego Nursing Service Consortium and affiliated hospitals, a background check and drug screening will be required prior to your first clinical experience.

Once enrolled you will learn about caring for the individual – infant , child and adult – in a variety of contexts. You will also experience hands-on learning in a myriad of community and clinical settings.
