Anxiety Self Help Will Prevent Panic Attacks

by Trevor Sinclair

If you experience panic attacks you are not the only one. Depending on the severity of the attack these are some of the symptoms you can feel. You can feel like you have a weight on your chest, it is hard to breath and you feel your heartbeat racing. Along with sweaty palms, difficulty in thinking straight and the room seems to be spinning out of control.

Victims of anxiety attacks often feel alone and ashamed of their reactions to everyday situations. Panic attacks aren't logical; so many people feel they are inferior. But, it's necessary to overcome your feeling of shame in order to get help. Some people's attacks are so bad, they need medication. However, many people have discovered anxiety self help techniques.

Most panic attacks are triggered through your body's instinctive response to danger with "fight or flight." The perceived threat causes your brain and nervous system to kick into action even if there is no danger in reality. Once you are able to recognize why your body is reacting to the threats in the environment this way, you will be closer to overcoming the anxiety.

One popular anxiety self help technique is a form of self hypnosis. When the panic starts to overtake you, inhale deeply. Exhale. Repeat this several times. Count backwards from ten or twenty, all the while purposely breathing in and out. Start at your feet and concentrate on relaxing your muscles all the way up your body.

Some people use visualization to help them overcome their attacks. They have a "safe place" that they picture in their mind. This might be somewhere in nature. It might be someplace from childhood. It might be your own living room. When they feel the symptoms of an attack, they will simply imagine themselves in the place where they feel relaxed and confident.

There is plenty of information out there so if these anxiety self help techniques don't work don't be afraid to look other places. There is a plethora of information geared specifically to those that suffer from panic attacks in both books and on the web. A little effort will go a long way so don't tolerate being a victim.

Finding out how to stop panic attacks can help you to feel more relaxed in your everyday life. You will no longer fear going out in public because you will know how to control your body's panic reaction. You might still have panic attacks, but with the confidence that you know how to control them and will not be overwhelmed by them.

An accepted anxiety self help method is self hypnosis. When a panic attack comes along, breathe deeply, then exhale, and repeat this a few times. While inhaling and exhaling, count backwards from ten or twenty for overcoming anxiety. Knowing how to stop panic attacks can help you lead a more happy life. You won't totally dread going out to public places because you will know that you can change your body's response to the environment's stimulus. You might still experience the symptoms of a panic attack, but you will be confident in your ability to stop them.
